SpinDrive - high-tech company rising from the university’s lab
The concept for SpinDrive took root in 2014 within a Business Finland project at LUT University. The project focused on commercializing magnetic bearings for high-speed applications. The research ended in 2015 and people gradually graduated as doctors but the idea seemed to have a high potential for key persons around the project.
Founded in 2015 by four technical graduates, SpinDrive emerged to explore and develop a company centered around the invention. After spinning out from university, the company maintained close collaboration with its laboratories, capitalizing on innovation and skilled individuals.
SpinDrive specializes in active magnetic bearings for high-speed applications with its core competence in software and hardware development of magnetic bearing controllers. Hardware is produced together with partners and software is developed in-house. The core idea behind their products involves lubricant-free magnetic bearings integrated into high-speed electric motors.
The solution improves energy efficiency and decreases the need for regular maintenance. Products are remotely controllable and highly flexible for various industry applications. An array of patents fortifies the company’s competitive edge and consistent innovation.
Currently, 16 dedicated people work in the company and most of their products are sold internationally. Over two investment rounds, SpinDrive has secured above 4 million euros in private and public funding.
SpinDrive is a prime example of a successful Research-to-Business (R2B) project, where years of research and development have culminated in a growing international business.
